Prangli Island Tourist Attractions and Info

Prangli (6.44km2) is the closest island to Tallinn that has retained its native population and culture for more than 600 years.

Believe it or not, permanent residents (70) have their own dialect of Estonian, ride their own type of boat and have very strong fishing traditions. Prangli is untouched by mass tourism, and has wonderful sandy beaches, pine forests and old fishermens villages.

There are a number of cosy and authentic local tourist farms offering accommodation, catering and transport on the island. For accommodation we also offer brand new Villa of Nature Energy.

From June to August, the local seaside restaurant is open for everybody. Cafe “Roheline Luuk” is also opened in the summertime from Thursday to Sunday. In summer time, one can enjoy different concerts, sport events and theme parties on Prangli Island. Transport to the island is offered daily from Leppneeme port in Viimsi. Prangli Travel organizes daytrips to Prangli Island from Tallinn City Centre.

What to see on Prangli Island?

1. Fishing villages
In its three small villages Prangli has managed to preserve the traditional fishing village atmosphere from the last century, mixed with some Soviet influences, and the narrow streets are bordered with dry-stone walls.

2. Memorial of the ship “Eestirand”
The “Eestirand” was one of the last ships taking deportees from Estonia to Russia in 1941. The captain, who steered the ship to the coast of Prangli after it had been bombed, saved more than 2700 Estonians from drowning and from being deported to the gulags in Russia.

3. Prangli Museum
A small private museum provides an introduction to the history and traditions of Prangli and Aksi Islands. Traditional seal-hunting and fishing equipment are included in its exhibits.

4. Prangli Church
There has been a church in Prangli Island for more than 400 years. It has been rebuilt 4 times, the Saint Lawrence church we see here today, was built in 1848.

5. Erratic boulders
Estonia is considered to be a classical distribution area for erratic boulders. Prangli is has many of these boulders. These large stones have provided an inexhaustible source for local folklore since ancient times and various legends and beliefs relate to them. Prangli Island is home to one of the 120 of Estonia’s giant boulders called Red Stone.

6. Beaches and forests
Prangli is untouched by mass tourism and it’s a wonderful place to admire Estonian nature. The island is rich in sandy beaches, and its many pine forests are filled with mushrooms and berries. None of the beaches on the island have lifeguards but all of the islanders and Estonians visitors still enjoy swimming here.

7. Natural-gas grill
In the 1900s gas was discovered on Prangli and on its tiny neighbouring island, Keri. For a while in the beginning of 20th century, Keri boasted the only natural gas fuelled lighthouse in the world. To this day, tourists can visit the public “natural gas grill”; located on Prangli Island.

A day on Prangli island
We were extremely satisfied with our day on Prangli island. We had the most sympathetic tour guide! And the food we got offered was gourmet! We have already advised our friends to visit you and your adorable Estonian island. Thank you!

A wonderful day at Prangli Island
Andreas was a fabulous guide on this lovely day out from Tallinn to Prangli island. First a lovely ferry ride of an hour from a tiny harbour set in lovely countryside 30 minutes drive from Tallin. We sat out on deck and were blessed with calm waters and beautiful sunshine. Arrived at beautiful Prangli island – very small with only about 50-60 inhabitants! We were taken on a tour by open top jeep and had lots of interesting stops and information from Andreas. He was genuinely enthusiastic about showing us this lovely place and telling us it’s history. Lunch was freshly caught fish and other local specialties at a rustic guesthouse in a beautiful countryside setting. After lunch we had time to ourselves for a walk and a cup of tea at a cafe by the harbour before taking the ferry back. Will definitely use this company again if we go back to Tallinn. First class.

Prangli Island tour
My sister and I did the Prangli Island tour with Berit. We had an amazing time. There were just 2 other travelers with us so the group was small and we were able to make it our own. The island is beautiful and a must see. Berit was very knowledgeable and friendly and made us feel very welcome on our second day in Estonia. We ate a delicious lunch with a local family (cod, potatoes, cottage cheese with dill, tomatoes and cucumber, followed by our choice of coffee or tea). If I ever get a change to come back to Estonia I will definitely do another tour and ask for Berit! Thanks for a lovely day!

Prangli Island day trip
I went on the Prangli Island day trip with Kristiina and had the most lovely day! The island is super pretty and peaceful and the guide was very professional and also great to talk to. 🙂 She told many interesting stories about the island, which has been continuously inhabited for about 600 years. That and riding on the back of a pick-up truck to see places I couldn’t reach by foot made the day much more special than if I had gone there by myself. We visited quite a few interesting sights in the morning, from the tower of a cute wooden church to a natural gas source (where I could blow the fire out myself, haha) and even picked some delicious berries on the way. Lunch was tasty and took place in a beautiful scenery. After that I had about 3 hours to explore the island by myself, walking around and enjoying the views. Totally recommend it!
